BASIC PAPERMAKING |
![]() |
| With Toni Smith
We will commence the workshop, using recycled paper to make A5 and A4 sheets of paper. Bring a mould and deckle, if you have one, some Vylene or Chux to use as felts between your sheets of paper, coloured thread, ribbons, petals and anything else you might like to add to the paper. Please bring a notebook, pen, sturdy shoes and a hand towel. The following morning is a good introduction to a fascinating aspect of papermaking using plant fibres to make various unique papers. We will learn about embedding and Laminating. Two sheets of paper put together with something laid between the sheets. This is quite fascinating and it is surprising how many different items you can use. Bring string, ribbon, petals, leaves, photos and photo-copies, in fact anything reasonably flat that you think might work. You will then learn how to emboss images into handmade paper, that are made from recycled mattboard or cotton pulp. Bottlebrush, Grevillea, fishbone fern and maidenhair work well, stencils and lino-cuts can also be used. Bring any of the following: old newspapers, couching cloths, roll of gladwrap, flowers and leaves, stencils (well sealed if card or paper), lace, embroidery, collograph plates, non-fast tissue paper (such as florists use). Now that you have all those lovely sheets of paper, what are you going to do with them? We will make books, a box, a card and an envelope. Bring: Cutting board or mat, sharp blade, craft glue, ruler, set square, clean cloths for wipe ups, old shiny magazine to glue on, and of course, your own beautiful handmade papers, and anything you may wish to decorate them with. The workshop commences with participants arrival during the afternoon of the first day. Dinner is served and the group get to know each other over the meal. Breakfast is at 8.30 am on the next day and the workshop session commences with the artist at 9.30 am. Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea are provided and the formal workshop concludes for that day around 4.30 pm. A relaxed dinner follows that evening. The next day follows a similar format as participants advance into new techniques and the Workshop concludes with a glass of Champagne, a chat and an appraisal of work, concluding around 5pm. Workshop cost is $395.00 per person. (single supplement $120.00 or bring your non participating partner). Workshop includes accommodation, all food, (BYO drinks) and tuition. Some materials for some workshops are additional. Phone Jenny for further information on 02 49772525 |
